Back to You: Anchoring Through September’s Shifts

September always feels like a threshold: the pace of summer softens, the air cools and life begins to lean towards something steadier, more grounded.

I took August as a month to pause, to step back from the usual rhythms, enjoy life and family and give myself space to reset at a soul level. Now I feel refreshed and ready to begin again, to return to rhythm both in my own life and in the way I share my work with you here.

For many of us, this transition brings a mixture of energy and unease. There is the comfort of returning to routine, the excitement of new beginnings and yet also the tug of overwhelm as though the rush of September sweeps us along before we have fully caught our breath.

I have been feeling that too, the soft pull between wanting to hold onto summer’s expansiveness and freedom and recognising that my body is asking for rhythm, anchor and reset.

Over the last two weeks I have been listening to that call through nutrition, rebuilding my body with good whole food and creating strength from the inside out. It feels like preparation not just for back-to-school and back-to-work rhythms but for the months ahead.

Breath as Anchor

In times of transition we need something steady to return to. The breath is always there, constant, faithful, waiting for us.

Transformational Breath® reminds me that I do not need to control what is changing around me. I can trust and let go, come back to the simple rhythm of my inhale and exhale and find stillness within.

“The breath becomes a bridge between what is shifting outside and what longs to feel safe inside.”

A Practice for September: 100 Breaths to Joy

This is one of my favourite breathwork practices for moments of change. It is simple yet powerful, a way to soften the edges of stress, steady the nervous system and reconnect to a lighter state of being.

How to practise:

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down.

  2. Place one hand on the heart and one on the belly.

  3. Begin breathing gently into the belly, allowing the inhale to expand you and the exhale to release tension.

  4. Choose your breath pattern. You can breathe in and out through the nose, or if you feel ready to go deeper you can breathe in and out through the mouth. Stay with one or the other and do not mix them.

  5. Breathe in to the count of 2 and out to the count of 1.

  6. Keep the breath connected with no pause between inhale and exhale.

  7. Continue breathing this way for 2–3 minutes.

  8. Then gently let the breath return to normal.

There is no need to rush. Let each breath meet you where you are. By the end of the exercise you may feel a gentle shift: more space in the body, more softness in the mind and more joy in simply being.

It is called 100 Breaths to Joy because when we give ourselves the gift of time and presence joy has a way of arising naturally.

If you would like to be guided through this, I have recorded a short video which you can watch below. Sometimes having a voice alongside your breath makes it easier to stay present and complete the full practice. You can watch it here.

You can also download my free eBook which will help you build your practice through a 7-day breathing challenge.

Returning to You

This season is about gently coming back to yourself. What I mean by that is coming back to the knowing that you already hold the strength you need. That you can do it. That the guidance you are seeking is within you if only you pause long enough to listen.

If you would like support in anchoring through this transitional time, I would love to welcome you to one of my upcoming gatherings.
