The Spring Exhale: Lightening the Load Through Breath
March often brings a subtle shift.
The days stretch a little longer, the air feels softer and there is a quiet sense that life is beginning to move again after the stillness of winter.
Spring is usually associated with fresh starts and new ideas, yet before anything grows the earth clears space. Leaves fall away, the soil softens and what has finished its cycle returns to the ground so something new can take root.
Over the past few weeks I have been noticing this same movement in my own life. A gentle pull to simplify, to streamline and to let go of what feels heavier than it needs to be, both internally and in the spaces around me, from my home to my business. Sometimes that simply means letting go of things I have been holding onto “just in case”, or because I once spent money on them and felt they should stay.
Nothing dramatic, simply creating space.
And I wonder if you might be feeling something similar.
Our breath often reflects what we are carrying, which is why simple breath awareness can be such a powerful way to create space in both the body and the mind.
A Season of Transition
This time of year also carries a symbolic transition.
In the Chinese zodiac we move from the reflective energy of the Snake into the more active energy of the Fire Horse. The Snake is often associated with shedding, wisdom and quiet transformation, teaching us to release what no longer fits so we can move forward lighter and more aware.
The Fire Horse brings a very different quality. It is dynamic, expressive and full of life.
Yet movement only feels natural when we are not carrying what we were meant to shed.
In many ways this mirrors the rhythm of the breath. Before we take a deep nourishing inhale there is often a natural exhale that clears the space first. The body releases, the lungs empty and only then can fresh air flow in.
Growth works in much the same way.
The Energy of Clearing
When I chose the name The Oya Energy for my work, it was because Oya represents this movement of transformation and clearing.
In Yoruba tradition Oya is associated with wind and change, not destruction for the sake of it but the kind of clearing that makes space for something new to emerge.
Sometimes the wind moves strongly and rearranges everything. At other times it simply passes through, shifting the air and leaving a sense of freshness behind.
Lately I have been feeling that quieter version of Oya’s energy. A gentle clearing rather than a storm.
And the breath often shows us where that clearing might begin.
Listening to the Breath
One of the first places we notice when life feels full is in the breath.
When we are busy or carrying tension the breath often stays high in the chest and becomes shorter without us even realising. The body tightens slightly and the mind keeps moving.
But when the breath begins to soften and move lower into the belly something changes.
The nervous system settles, the body feels more grounded and there is often a little more clarity in our thoughts.
It is a small shift, yet it can make a big difference.
A Simple Breath to Create Space
You might like to try this simple practice whenever you feel the need to reset or reconnect with yourself.
Step 1 – Notice
Sit comfortably or lie down somewhere you feel supported.
Before changing anything, simply observe your breath.
Where do you feel the movement?
Is it mainly in your chest?
Is your belly moving at all?
Just notice with curiosity.
Step 2 – Place Your Hands
Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly.
Feel which hand moves more as you breathe.
Very often the chest rises first while the belly remains quiet.
Step 3 – Invite the Breath Lower
Breathe in slowly through your nose and imagine the breath travelling down towards your belly.
You may feel the lower hand rise slightly. Even the smallest movement is enough.
Allow the chest to follow naturally without forcing anything.
Step 4 – Soften the Exhale
As you breathe out, let your shoulders soften and allow the belly to relax.
The breath leaves the body and creates a little more space for the next one.
Continue like this for a few minutes and notice how your body begins to settle.
Spring reminds us that growth happens naturally when the conditions are right.
Sometimes all we need to do is clear a little space and allow the next breath to arrive. From there, the body often begins to remember its natural rhythm.
